A Major Update to the National Plumbing Code of Canada
Since January 1, 2026, the National Plumbing Code of Canada has integrated several modifications inspired by the National Plumbing Code of Canada 2020 (NPC-2020). For apprentices preparing for the Red Seal exam (Red Seal (Interprovincial) program), these changes are not optional: they appear directly on both the theoretical and practical exams.
This post reviews the most frequently tested changes and gives you the keys to mastering them before your exam.
1. Venting of Fixtures — The Big Reform
The most structural change concerns venting systems. Where the old edition tolerated certain empirical exceptions, the 2026 version imposes mandatory vent diameter calculations according to Table 2.4.10.1. of the Code.
What you need to remember for the exam:
- The minimum diameter for a secondary vent (circuit vent) increases to 3 in (76 mm) for a group of more than 4 toilets, up from 2½ in previously.
- The maximum distance between a fixture and its primary vent is now calculated using the formula L = 0.6 × D × √P where D is the nominal diameter of the fixture in inches and P is the allowable pressure loss in inches of water column (0.3048 in H₂O by default for a properly sized system).
- Wet venting is now explicitly permitted on kitchen sinks and double lavatories up to 4 fixture units, provided the minimum slope is 1:50 (2%) instead of 1:100.
Red Seal exam tip: You will almost always be given a sketch with three fixtures already connected — you are asked for the minimum secondary vent diameter. The correct answer is almost always 3 in if the group includes 3 toilets or more.
2. Backflow Preventers — New Categories
Article 2.6.2. of the Code has been revised to introduce a stricter classification of backflow preventers, aligned with CSA standard B64.10-21. Notable changes:
- Low risk level (residential) — A simple double check valve assembly (DCVA) is sufficient for underground irrigation connections. Minimum diameter: ¾ in.
- Medium risk level (light commercial) — A reduced pressure principle assembly (RP) is now mandatory for any connection at risk of back-siphonage of stagnant water or effluents. Example: a car wash or commercial laundry.
- High risk level (industrial) — Double RP with discharge alarm. New requirement for chemical treatment facilities and fire sprinkler systems with antifreeze additives.
For the exam: You will be presented with a usage scenario (e.g., "craft brewery with chemical rinse tank") and you must choose the appropriate backflow preventer. The answer is almost always RP for commercial uses, DCVA for simple residential.
3. Sizing of Drainage Pipes — New Tables
The drainage pipe sizing tables (Tables 2.4.5.1. to 2.4.5.4.) have been replaced with values from the NPC-2020. The most significant changes:
- The minimum diameter of a building drain increases from 3 in to 4 in (101.6 mm) for any building with more than 2 dwelling units
- The minimum slope for a 4 in drain is 1/8 in per foot (1.04%) — don't confuse this with 3 in drains which require 1/4 in per foot (2.08%)
- The maximum number of fixture units (FU) for a 4 in drain at 1/8 in/ft drops from 180 to 160 FU
4. Approved Materials — Restrictions on PVC
Article 2.6.1. now restricts the use of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in indoor plumbing installations. PVC is prohibited for:
- Hot water risers (service temperature > 60 °C)
- Piping exposed to direct UV rays (roofs, exterior walls)
- Potable water lines inside buildings of 3 storeys or more
Type M copper, PEX (CSA B137.5), and ABS (CSA B181.1) remain the recommended materials for the exam. PEX is now accepted for all residential hot and cold water applications, including risers up to 3 storeys.
5. Frost Protection — New Burial Depths
The Canadian frost line map has been updated. For the Red Seal exam, remember these minimum depths:
- Zone 1 (Montreal, Laval, Montérégie): 1.20 m (48 in)
- Zone 2 (Quebec City, Trois-Rivières, Estrie): 1.50 m (60 in)
- Zone 3 (Saguenay, Côte-Nord, Abitibi): 1.80 m (72 in)
- Zone 4 (Northern Canada): 2.10 m (84 in)
The 2026 novelty: insulation of buried pipes is now mandatory in zones 3 and 4, with a minimum R-value of R-10 for potable water lines and R-15 for drainage lines.
Conclusion
The 2026 amendments to the National Plumbing Code of Canada are the most significant since 2018. For the Red Seal exam, focus your review on the four modified sections: venting (30% of new questions), backflow prevention (25%), sizing (25%), and materials (20%).
