Grounding and bonding: the most tested rules on the Red Seal exam

Why Grounding Is THE Most Tested Section

On the Red Seal (Interprovincial) exam, questions on Section 10 — Grounding and Bonding of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code) appear in virtually every session. According to candidate feedback from recent years, they account for between 15% and 20% of the questions — often the margin between passing and failing, given that the first-attempt failure rate hovers around 35%.

The problem? Section 10 is also where concepts get confused the most. Here are the essential rules you need to master, with the exact Code references.

1. Grounding or Bonding?

Rule 10-100 of the Code defines two distinct functions:

  • Grounding: connecting conductors and metal enclosures to the earth via grounding electrodes. Its role is to limit voltage on enclosures relative to the earth and to allow protective devices to operate in the event of a fault.
  • Bonding: connecting together metal parts that are not intended to carry current so they remain at the same potential and present no dangerous voltage difference.

On the exam, a classic question presents an installation and asks whether the error is a grounding or bonding defect. The answer always comes down to the purpose: clearing a fault to ground, or equalizing potentials.

2. The Grounding Conductor: Minimum 6 AWG

Rule 10-114 requires that the grounding conductor for a service be sized in accordance with Table 16, but never smaller than 6 AWG copper (or 4 AWG aluminum). Table 16 matches the conductor size to the service capacity: the larger the service, the larger the grounding conductor must be. Candidates often forget to check the “aluminum” column of the table — an aluminum conductor must be larger than a copper conductor for the same service.

3. Grounding Electrodes (10-700 to 10-710)

The Code recognizes several types of electrodes, each with its own specific requirements:

  • Metal water piping (10-702): usable if buried at least 3 m. Note: if this is the only electrode, an additional electrode (rod or plate) must be added.
  • Ground rods (10-704): minimum 3 m in length and 16 mm in diameter for a copper-clad steel rod.
  • Concrete-encased electrode (10-706): at least 6 m of 12 mm rebar embedded in footings in direct contact with the soil.
  • Steel building frame (10-708): steel columns in direct contact with the earth.

The 25 ohm rule (10-700(3)) is a must-know: if the resistance of a single electrode exceeds 25 ohms, a second electrode must be installed, connected to the first by the grounding conductor.

4. Bonding and Table 41

Bonding conductors are sized according to Table 41 of the Code, which is based on the size of the circuit phase conductors. Rule 10-402 requires connecting the grounded neutral conductor to the service equipment: this bonding jumper is what allows fault current to return to the source and trip the protection.

5. The 3 Traps That Fail Candidates

  • Confusing the grounding conductor and the bonding conductor: the former runs to the electrodes, the latter connects metal enclosures together.
  • Forgetting the additional electrode when water piping is the only electrode (10-702).
  • Misreading Table 16 or Table 41: always check whether the value required is for copper or aluminum.

Section 10 is mastered through practice: redo timed sizing exercises with Table 16 and Table 41 in front of you, exactly like on exam day. Structured preparation with realistic simulations remains the best way to turn that 15–20% of questions into guaranteed points.
